POMS information

This page has several chapters – please click on the page tab “POMS information” above to see them all.

POMS is caused by a virus called OsHV-1. The solution to this problem is complex and requires a multifaceted approach. In countries such as France, New Zealand and Australia there is hope that genetic selection will lead to commercially produced oysters with partial resistance to this virus. Changes to farming practices will be of great benefit, based on improved scientific understanding of the behaviour of the virus and the disease. In the meantime it is important to maintain biosecurity to keep the virus out of areas where it does not yet occur, for as long as possible. Species diversification and attention to business risk management will also be crucial for the industry.
